KEYNOTE ADDRESS - PROFESSOR HANS PETER BECK, CERN
With the discovery of the Higgs particle, the CERN's particle physicists celebrated a spectacular achievement in July 2012. The discovery had a huge impact that generated over 150,000 media reports and which reached over one billion people worldwide.
As a leading scientist at CERN, Professor Beck holds pivotal functions in the design, development and construction of key elements of the ATLAS experiment. He also leads teams unraveling the physics results hidden in the vast amount of data produced with every proton-proton collision at the Large Hadron Collider. He is one of the programme’s principal ambassadors and addresses audiences at all levels of understanding about the importance of CERN's work to business, medicine, and public life in general.
Professor Beck’s talk will give a fascinating insight on the work and extraordinary achievements secured by CERN in recent years, and the impact this has had on advancing understanding of the inner works of the Universe from the Big Bang to today.
Spin-offs created by the fundamental research at CERN cover many aspects from advances in technology and bringing people together from all nations and ethnicities, to training young people to excel in all they do. In short, to achieve the unimaginable. When these young people leave CERN they perform in new and exciting ways, adapting the skills they have developed to tackle challenges in new and imaginative ways.
